The senior housing administration minor introduces students to the context and foundational knowledge required for administrative or managerial work within residential communities for older adults - including independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer's/memory care, and continuing care retirement communities. Students will examine the current U.S. health care and senior housing environment, best practices in day-to-day management and marketing of senior housing communities, and have the opportunity to gain additional understanding of ethical, legal, and gerontological issues applicable to aging populations. Health Administration majors may pursue either the concentration in Senior Housing Administration or complete senior housing coursework to fulfill elective requirements for other concentrations in the degree.
Population growth of individuals over age 65 in the United States is increasing annually, giving rise to companies and agencies who provide housing and supportive services for the elderly. Continuous employment growth is forecasted with many opportunities found in LifePlan/Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs). This includes those with independent and assisted living and some with special care units such as memory and Alzheimer's care support. Some jobs are found in home and community care agencies and programs specializing in services for the elderly and in nursing homes. Positions include managerial and supervisor jobs in sales and marketing, operations, as program directors for health and wellness support services.
